This year, the Newton High School world language department produced 16 students who will receive the Seal of Biliteracy. Fourteen students receive a Silver Seal of Biliteracy from the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE), with two students receiving the Gold Seal of Biliteracy.
The Seal of Biliteracy is a credential for high school graduates who have attained intermediate and advanced proficiencies in English and one or more additional language(s). Students take The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) exam.
"For the Silver Seal, students have to receive at least Intermediate Mid or above on the exam in all four language modalities: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. With the Silver Seal of Biliteracy (intermediate mid), potential employers can depend on students to use their second language skills in sales, reception and other service jobs,” according to the KSDE.
For the Gold Seal, students have to receive an Advanced Low, the highest a student can score on the test, in all four language modalities.
The KSDE determines that with the Gold Seal of Biliteracy (advanced low), you qualify to use your language skills in jobs such as a K-12 language teacher, firefighter, nurse, 911 dispatcher, customer service representative and legal aid, and you are ready to succeed academically at the postsecondary level.
