On Monday, September 11, 2023 the USD 373 Board of Education along with Newton Fire/EMS Chief Roberson and Newton, KS Police Department Detective Salmans and SRO Hulse honored NHS junior Ethan House for his quick thinking and life-saving actions of a fellow student.

A fellow student began choking in class at Newton High School on August 30 and Ethan jumped into action without hesitation, performing the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodging the item the student was choking on.

Ethan says he knew the Heimlich and was comfortable performing it because his mother, Kimberly, is a nurse at Health Ministries and because his pediatrician, Dr. Ricardo Patron, taught him the maneuver when he became a big brother to his sister, Lauren.
