Staff feature: Jeremy Gooch, Transition Coordinator

1- What's a transition coordinator? What do you do?

As a transition coordinator, I help students and staff develop Individualized Education Program (IEP) transition plans that outline students' post-secondary goals and career interests. Whether a student is interested in college, vocational/technical school, or programs like Project SEARCH, I work with them to create a personalized plan to work towards throughout high school. These transition services begin when the student turns 14 and are discussed annually at their IEP meeting. This is my first year in the role, so I will be learning a lot as the year progresses, but I am excited about the opportunity to support students in achieving their future goals.

2- What do you like about USD 373? What brought you back?

I returned to work at USD 373 because I love the community here. I previously spent nearly a decade as the Project SEARCH Coordinator at Newton Medical Center, during which I developed many meaningful friendships and thoroughly enjoyed supporting students as they achieved their goals. The students at USD 373 are exceptional, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch their progress. Also, USD 373 fosters an environment where teachers can continuously grow and improve. It's a place that encourages personal and professional development, which is something I value.

3- What's your background in education?

This is my 19th year in education. I began my career in physical education before transitioning into special education as an Adaptive SPED Teacher. I then took on the role of Project SEARCH Coordinator. After a brief stint as an Athletic Director, I spent the last two years as an Assistant Special Education Director and Behavior School Principal. These diverse experiences have given me a broader understanding of education, for which I am very grateful.

4-Anything else you wish shared about special education in general?

Returning to this job, I quickly realized that there are truly exceptional people here at every level, which made my decision to come back an easy one. The leadership in Special Education is outstanding, and they have fostered a culture that I am genuinely excited about. As long as they will have me, I plan on staying until I retire. I hope to contribute in many ways this year, giving back to the district and the Special Education Cooperative for the difference they have made in my life. I am VERY Grateful to be here.
