Staff feature: Thomas Derstine, Maintenance at NHS

Maintenance worker Thomas Derstine and co-workers have a saying about Newton High School. It’s the “school that never sleeps.”

Between navigating several 1970s HVAC units and a full slate of activities that keep the school hopping during evenings and weekends, crews are never lacking in something to do.

“I hear how people say we don't take care of our buildings. Well, from a maintenance point of view, I work hard year-round to keep things going. I do what I can to keep school in session,” Derstine shared.

Derstine is based at NHS but is in his 28th year with USD 373 Maintenance after coming here from working a custodial position. Previous to that, he was a certified auto mechanic.

Derstine and fellow maintenance worker, Dave Kliewer, have a constant demand to fix something. They follow a work order system where employees can submit their issue online and the pair address it as they are able, such as a teacher needing a new whiteboard put up in their room. But tasks like that can be interrupted by more pressing tasks, like a water leak from copper pipes recently.

“I used to have this concept that I'm gonna get ahead of all these problems with things breaking down. Now I just try and stay even, because you'll never get ahead in maintenance. I do all kinds of pre-maintenance on stuff, but it just keeps coming at you,” Derstine said.

He enjoys the satisfaction of leaving things better than he found them.

The remodeling of the NHS Auditorium and building the new electrical classroom in CTE come to mind as some of his most memorable work. So does being on call nearly every day of the year.

“If you don't mind getting a little dirty and you're willing to learn, this is the job for you.  You will get lots of experience and knowledge in  just about any trade out there…electrical, plumbing, cabinetry door hardware, HVAC etc,” Derstine said.

Recently, our maintenance crews have put in the manpower and hours to clear parking lots and sidewalks to prepare for school following snow days. Thank you for what you do! #RailerPride
