Newton Public Schools (USD 373) is proud to announce the hiring of Jason Smith as the district’s new Director of Facilities and Maintenance.
“I aim to do the best that I can do to ensure that the facilities the population utilizes to both facilitate and receive education are in the best condition that we can get them. I understand the importance of the environment that surrounds the educational process, so I aim to do whatever I can to make the environment one that is beneficial to everyone involved,” Smith said.
A proud Newton native and graduate of the Newton High School Class of 1999, Smith brings a wealth of leadership, logistics, and operations experience to the district following a 20-year career in the United States Air Force. During his military service, Smith held a variety of assignments around the world—including tours in Turkey, Honduras, the Middle East, and two deployments to Afghanistan. He retired honorably in 2021 after concluding his career in the Office of the Inspector General.
Since retirement, Smith has continued to serve in a civilian capacity as a Logistics Manager for the Department of Defense. Now, he’s made the meaningful decision to return home and transition into public education.
“After 24 years away, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to come home,” Smith shared. “My children have never had the chance to live near their extended family, and this move allows us to live a more ‘normal’ life—together again.”
