Which instrument should I play?
Students in band may choose any of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet (cornet), French horn, trombone, baritone (euphonium), or tuba. Students may only play percussion (drums and bells) with the approval of the band instructors. Students are responsible for obtaining their own instruments, though some instruments may be provided by the school if available.
Class Materials for Newton Bands
1. A high quality instrument (percussionists need bells and snare drum)
2. Folding music stand (for practicing at home)
3. Pencil
4.Instrument case tag (write your name and school on it and attach it to your case)
5. Accessories:
FLUTE: cleaning rod and swab, polishing cloth
OBOE, BASSOON, CLARINET, SAXOPHONE: cleaning swab, cork grease,
polishing cloth, extra reeds
BRASS: valve/slide oil, tuning slide grease, polishing cloth, flexible cleaning brush
PERCUSSION: plastic bell mallets, snare drum sticks

5th Grade: Standard of Excellence Book 1 (red cover)
6th Grade: Standard of Excellence Book 1 (red) AND Standard of Excellence Book 2 (blue)
7th Grade: Standard of Excellence Book 2 (blue) AND Standard of Excellence Book 3 (green)

Newton High School Bands & Jazz Ensembles
All band students at NHS are part of the RAILER MARCHING BAND. After football season, the band splits into two concert groups for the remainder of the year: Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. NHS also offers two award-winning jazz ensembles that meet during a regular class period. There are a variety of opportunities for student musicians to grow and succeed at Newton High School.
