To report an absence, please contact your child's school directly. Do not use social media, etc. to message.

Newton High School Attendance

Parents should call the NHS Attendance Secretary at 284-6280, x1118, to inform the school of their student's absence.

Consistent attendance is essential for success in school. The No Child Left Behind legislation requires that all schools have at least a 90 percent student attendance rate. Kansas law KSA 72-1113 requires schools to report truancy when a student misses a significant part* of three consecutive school days, or five days in a semester, or seven days in a year. NHS students who arrive late to class are counted as tardy for a designated amount of minutes and are then unexcused absent following that time limit.

* From BOE Policy JBD - Absences and Excuses:
An absence of more than 120 minutes or more (2 hours) in any school day shall be considered an absence for a significant part of the school day.
